Multipurpose, High Activity Copper Surface Prep
ChemPrep (RD-58) is a mildly acidic cleaner used as the final step in preparing copper for subsequent processes requiring an extreme level of cleanliness. A unique activator system removes anti-tarnish coatings found as protective covering on incoming foils and laminate - this prevents halos and streaking. Used in combination with NeutraPrep (RD-93), mechanical scrubbing can be eliminated prior to photoresist, electroless Cu, or oxide application. The elimination of scrubbing allows more uniform line definition without directional gouges. The resultant surface is uniformly activated and free of waterbreak, while contamination becomes soluble and is easily rinsed.
At higher temperatures
ChemPrep (RD-58) will easily remove organic soils, fingerprints and some polymeric residuals from inks, dry films, and solder masks. It is an ideal preparation for solder leveling and roller tinning. Under normal conditions, the etch rate is less than 1 microinch/minute.
ChemPrep (RD-58) S is available for use in conveyorized spray systems.
MAKE-UP:
Bath strength and operating temperature are varied depending on the degree of cleaning action required.
Operating Temperature |
ChemPrep (RD-58) |
Time |
70º - 100º F |
25-33% |
4 - 5 minutes |
120º - 150º F |
5-20% |
1/2 - 3 minutes |
For highest cleaning activity and speed, heat solution to 120º - 150º F. Dwell times depend upon oxidation, soil level and anti-corrosion films on the surface.
OPERATION:
When used at lower temperatures, agitate the work or the solution to optimize cleaning. Maintain bath volumes by additions of water. Level of
ChemPrep (RD-58) can be determined by a simple titration. One gallon of bath should clean approximately 300 sqft of surface. Provide adequate rinsing with agitated overflow (use air for turbulence if necessary) or with spray.
EQUIPMENT:
Tanks may be constructed of stainless steel, polypropylene or PVC. Quartz, titanium or stainless steel heaters may be used.
SAFETY:
ChemPrep (RD-58) is mildly acidic, exercise care when handling. Protective clothing, gloves and goggles are strongly recommended. Avoid inhalation of vapors. Store away from oxidizers. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.
DISPOSAL:
Spent cleaning solution will contain dissolved copper. The solution will require neutralization and treatment for sequestered metal. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations.
