Copper Microetch
SatinEtch (RD-83) is a cost-effective fine-definition etch process for use prior to plating or oxide deposition. Because of very high Available Oxygen Content, use costs are significantly lower than with other liquid microetch products, allowing less frequent solution changes under high loading or contaminant levels. Waste treatment is simplified since there are no chelating agents in the product.
The normal etch rate for
SatinEtch (RD-83) is between 15 to 20 µ inches/minute at 75º to 80º F. This etch rate is maintained consistently in normal use. It is compatible with slow deposition electroless copper formulations since less metal is removed per minute than with other products. Use costs and waste treatment are thereby reduced.
SatinEtch (RD-83) will not attack ink or dry film resists.
MAKE-UP:
SatinEtch (RD-83) is supplied as a liquid concentrate.
SatinEtch (RD-83) use solutions are prepared by adding in the order listed:
For 100 gallon tank
- 1) Water, deionized or tap 80-90 gallons
- 2) SatinEtch (RD-83) 10-20 gallons
OPERATION:
SatinEtch (RD-83) should be used at 75º - 95º F (etch rate increases with temperature). Time 1 to 4 minutes.
CONTROL:
See
control titration procedure (below).
EQUIPMENT:
Polypropylene or polyethylene tanks are recommended.
SAFETY:
SatinEtch (RD-83) use solutions will contain an acid and an oxidant. Avoid contact with skin or eyes. Wear protective equipment when using. If contact is made with eyes, seek immediate medical attention. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.
DISPOSAL:
Neutralize to pH 8-10 with caustic soda (carefully!); remove precipitated copper and dump remaining adjusted solution - if acceptable with your local sanitation district. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regula-tions.
Contact your RD Chemical representative for further information.
PACKAGING:
SatinEtch (RD-83) is available in 5 and 55 gallon drums.
Control Titration (Analytical) Procedure for SatinEtch (RD-83)
Equipment Required:
- 10.00 ml volumetric pipets (3)
- graduated cylinder (min: 10 ml, max: 50 ml)
- 250 ml volumetric flask
- 50 ml buret
- 2 X 250 titration flasks
- magnetic stirrer
Reagents required:
- Approx. 0.2 N Ferrous Sulfate
- O.1 N Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4)
- 20% Sulfuric Acid solution
- Deionized water
Procedure:
Pipet 10 mls of
SatinEtch (RD-83) into the 250 volumetric flask and dilute to mark with D.I. water. Pipet out a 10 ml sample, dilute with 50 ml DI water, pipet in 10 ml 0.2N ferrous sulfate followed by approx. 10 ml of 20% sulfuric acid. Prepare a blank with all ingredients except the sample in the other titration flask. Titrate both to first pink endpoint with 0.100N KMnO4 . Subtract the ml for sample from the ml for blank.
% RD-83 = 12.05 X (Blank mls - Sample mls)
