ChemPolish™ SS RDZ-1815

RD Chemical Logo

A System for Chemical Polishing 300 Series Stainless Steel RDZ-1815

ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) is an acidic bath used for cleaning, polishing and passivating 300 Series (austenitic) Stainless Steel to render it suitable for use in extreme environments (such as high vacuum, medical or aerospace applications). ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) leaves a brilliant specular finish, free of etching, hydrogen embrittlement, or halide-induced stress cracking. The surface is cleaned completely of any organic contamination, is free of soluble inorganic residues and has highly reduced particulate count. ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) gives maximum brilliance with minimum material loss, approximately 0.0001 inch (1/10 mil) per minute.

PRE-TREATMENT:
ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) is preceded by a cleaner, ideally MicroClean Ti™ (RDZ-1849), followed by a rinse. If weld scale is present after cleaning, the part should be treated in Alkaline Descale (RDZ-1734) for 90 minutes at 200°+ F, followed by a water rinse and a 30-second dip in Descale Remover (RDZ-1735). This removes the weld scale and prepares the surface for a uniform chemical polish (see Product Data Sheet for Alkaline Descale).

MAKE-UP:
ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) is used as supplied at 175 ± 5° F for 2 to 5 minutes (typically). IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow bath temperature to fall below 170°F.

OPERATION:
ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) may be controlled/monitored by titration, or specific gravity, or color. Certain alloys (especially high carbon) of Stainless may raise a black smut while being polished. This can be removed by a short (30-180 second) dip in room temperature 50% Nitric acid.

EQUIPMENT:
Very ruggedly constructed polypropylene tanks, reinforced for high-temperature use, are required. Teflon or PVDF may be used, but these are usually too costly. Teflon steam coils are the best method of heating the bath. Quartz electrical heaters may also be used. However, some form of mild agitation to keep the solution moving over heaters is recommended. This prevents localized overheating and minimizes brightener decomposition.

DISPOSAL:
ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) is strongly acidic:
used solutions will contain dissolved nickel and chrome metals that will precipitate when neutralized to pH 9.0. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations. Contact your RD Chemical representative for further information.

RD Chemical Company makes these recommendations in good faith, based on laboratory and field testing. Ultimate responsibility for propriety of use, however, must rest with the purchaser and user. RD Chemical Company recommends thorough testing of its products, before use.

SAFETY:

Caution should be exercised in handling ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) or any of the additives. The ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) system is highly acidic and will cause permanent eye damage if contact is made and may cause skin lesions if not washed off promptly. Accordingly, it is important to wear complete eye protection and clothing that is resistant to dilute acids when working with ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) or the additives. When the ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) bath is in operation, it gives off various oxides of nitrogen and other acidic gases. Therefore, a ventilation system capable of providing airflow of 75 feet per minute away from the operator is required. This will necessitate between 100 and 800 cubic feet per minute airflow for each lineal foot of operating side of the tank, depending upon the design of tank and ducting. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.

PACKAGING:

ChemPolish SS™ (RDZ-1815) is available in 5, 15 and 55 gallon poly drums.

MicroClean™ BS  RDZ-1816

RD Chemical Logo

De-Oxidizer for Nitinol

A deoxidizer for removing extreme oxides formed by high temperature on Nitinol, and other Titanium alloys. MicroClean™ BS (RDZ-1816)will cause some low level metal attack, but usually will clean up essentially any oxide level in a short time (1-5 minutes) and metal loss within this time is minimal. If any metal loss is not acceptable, use MicroClean™ Ti (RDZ-1849), which will deoxidize much more slowly, but will give zero metal attack.

MAKE-UP:
Use as received, do not dilute. May be used at room temperature, or heated. There is no maximum temperature. Higher temperatures result in more rapid deoxidation, and metal loss.

OPERATION:
Immerse parts in solution, agitation will speed oxide removal. Ideal operation is to treat parts in MicroClean™ BS (RDZ-1816) , then rinse rapidly in water, and do final treatment/deoxidize in MicroClean™ Ti (RDZ-1849). Then rinse.

EQUIPMENT:
Use/store only in plastic containers, will attack most metals and glass.

SAFETY:

Contains strong acids, use with caution, do not allow to contact skin, or eyes. If contact occurs, wash immediately with cold tap water. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.

DISPOSAL:
May contain dissolved heavy metals when spent, depending on alloy being cleaned, which must be removed before disposal. Also contains Fluorides, which are restricted in some jurisdictions. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations. Contact your RD Chemical representative for further information.

PACKAGING:

4 liter bottles, and 20 liter pails, and 200 Liter Drums.

MicroClean™ Ti  RDZ-1849

RD Chemical Logo

Scale and Oxide remover for Titanium/Nitinol

Nitinol and Titanium is often extruded, drawn, or burned in the formation process, which creates organo-metallic compounds or oxides. These compounds are essentially impossible to dissolve without etching the metal, and therefore must be destroyed to be removed. MicroClean™ Ti (RDZ-1849) destroys these compounds by removing the metal component, and does not attack the metal. This process may take some significant time and/or temperature. When cleaning is completed, the work should be rinsed rapidly, and moved to the next step quickly, before oxide formation begins. MicroClean™ Ti (RDZ-1849) may also be used on other metals, such as Cobalt/ Chromium.

MAKE-UP:
Use as received, do not dilute. Use as hot as convenient, up to the boiling point. Cleaning speed doubles for every 20O F of temperature increase.

OPERATION:
Make up evaporation losses with water, preferably deionized. Cover tank to minimize contact with air. Agitation helps, but do not use air bubbling.

EQUIPMENT:
Any equipment that can handle the use temperature and chemistry is acceptable. Stainless steel, or Polypropylene is recommended.

SAFETY:

Use extreme caution, contains Caustic Alkali. Splash goggles or full face shield is mandatory. Rubber gloves, and any other protection required to keep from any contact with skin or eyes. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.

DISPOSAL:
May pick up Nickel or other heavy metals, which must be removed before disposal. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations. Contact your RD Chemical representative for further information.

PACKAGING:

4 liter bottles, 20 liter pails, and 200 liter drums.

Ti Pickling Solution RDZ-1776

RD Chemical Logo

Clean/Deoxidize Titanium and Alloys of Titanium

Ti Pickling Solution (RDZ-1776) cleans and deoxidizes even heat treated Titanium and its alloys, rapidly and completely. Ti Pickling Solution (RDZ-1776) may be used simply diluted and heated, or up to 10% Hydrogen Peroxide may be added to accelerate the process dramatically.

Ti Pickling Solution (RDZ-1776) has an extended life when simply diluted, and when stored in plastic containers, will last for many applications, exact life is a function of how much oxide is on the metal.

When mixed with Hydrogen Peroxide, the cleaning process is speeded dramatically, but the life is also shortened dramatically, and it will certainly not last over night, and may not last that long, depending on the oxide, and the alloy being cleaned.

MAKE-UP:
Use at 50%. May be used at room temperature, or heated to 50° C (120° F). Higher temperatures result in faster cleaning. Hydrogen Peroxide may be added, use up to 10% of 30% Active Hydrogen Peroxide.

OPERATION:
Use at up to 50° C, higher temperatures produce faster cleaning. Cleaning times will vary with oxide thickness, and alloy composition.

EQUIPMENT:
Store only in plastic, glass and metal will be (slowly) attacked by Ti Pickling Solution (RDZ-1776). Glass or metal may be used for short term cleaning/heating. For small quantities it is best to put into plastic jar, with lid, heat (carefully) in microwave.

SAFETY:

Ti Pickling Solution contains Fluoroboric Acid, which is poisonous and corrosive, do not allow to contact skin or eyes. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.

DISPOSAL:
May pick up heavy metals during use, which need removal before dumping. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations. Contact your RD Chemical representative for further information.

PACKAGING:

One liter bottles, 4 liter bottles, and 20 liter pails.
